Over the years, Pelican
Island has faced many threats from those who wished to exploit or
destroy its wildlife and natural habitats. Each time, concerned
citizens and environmental organizations rose to the challenge of
preserving this unique refuge for future generations.
Today, Pelican Island
National Wildlife Refuge faces its most serious threat - the
development of the shoreline along its boundary. Development can
reduce the area's water quality by increasing the runoff of
sediments, fertilizers, pesticides, and petrochemicals. A decline in
water quality will directly affect the food base that sustains the
island's nesting bird colonies. Waterfront development can also lead
to more boat traffic that can adversely affect the nesting
birds.
A strong cooperative effort
will be required to protect the Pelican Island National Wildlife
refuge and its tremendous fish and wildlife resources. Please join
us in the preservation of Pelican Island and the National Wildlife
Refuge System.
